The problem of a leaking mini fridge is a fairly common occurrence that should not really raise eyebrows as such. Although it’s not a good sign, this problem should not cause so much panic because the solutions are not very complicated unless the cause is a technical mishap. There are two main reasons why your mini fridge could be socking up water in the various pockets inside and underneath. The two causes of a leaking mini fridge are:
Blocked Defrost Drain
This is one of the most common causes of a leaking mini fridge. The defrost drain can be blocked by either food particles or other types of debris clog up the drain hose. A clogged up drain hose then causes an accumulation of ice which eventually melts thus resulting in a leakage. The water leaks out of the freezer and refrigerator. This problem can be so annoying especially if you are using a mini fridge that is not placed on some kind of a mat. The mat helps to reduce the spread of the water leaking out of the freezer and the main compartment.
Fixing a blocked defrost drain requires you to try a couple of things. First, you need to flush the drain from inside the freezer using warm water, a turkey baster or a small funnel. If this does not work, you can use a straightened coat hanger or a pipe cleaner to force the clog out. If the clog is a minor one, this fix should be enough. However, if it does not work, you can remove the debris from the check valve at the end of the drain hose by hand. To do this, you will have to pull the refrigerator away from the wall and locate the defrost drain hose in the service panel. Cleaning the rubber check valve at the drain hose should help to solve the problem because you will have cleaned off any debris that clogs the hose.
Clogged or Frozen Water Supply
This is another problem that could result in the leaking of a mini-fridge. Other than that, it also affects the ice maker’s ability to produce ice in the normal way as well as inhibiting the flow of water from the dispenser.
Judging from the nature of this cause, it is evident that a leaking mini fridge as a result of a clogged water supply would require a more detailed solution.
On the contrary, the fix is actually very easy unless the clog is caused by a different damage other than a damaged valve. What you need to do is, first of all, locate the shutoff valve and ensure that it is closed. Once you have done that, you can go ahead and inspect for leaks, clogs or kinks. If you learn of any breaks in the line, make sure you replace the entire water supply.
In conclusion, mini fridges leak because of two main reasons and they include a clogged water supply and a blocked defrost drain both of which can be fixed using simple hacks at home. But if for whatever reason you decide to get a new one, you can find one here.
