How to Make a Thermos Flask?

Have you ever pondered how important a thermos flask is in your life? I mean, just think of it, the number of times you need a cold drink to remain cold or a hot one to remain hot so is way more than you would care to count. Truth is, the thermos flask is something most of us would not go a day without needing it and it is expensive too. The cost of an average thermos flask with a standard performance can be quite expensive even for an average earner. Thankfully, once you have a grasp of the principle behind the workings of a thermos flask, I don’t think there’s anything that can stop you from making one. That is why in this article, we are going to share with you on how you can make a thermos flask all by yourself.

Materials required

  • A small glass bottle
  • A pair of scissors
  • An insulation epoxy
  • Aluminium foil
  • A larger plastic bottle (preferably 2 liter)
  • Duct tape
  • Step 1:

Take the plastic bottle and cutoff the bottom but do not get rid of the cut piece

    Step 2:

Now place the glass bottle inside the plastic bottle ensuring there is space between the two bottles. The standard opening on a plastic water bottle is too small. So, you should cut a bigger piece so that it is enough for the glass bottle to fit.

    Step 3:

Once you have ascertained that the glass bottle has fitted comfortably in the plastic bottle, remove it and use an aluminium foil to wrap all round. What the aluminium does is it ensures that any heat from the liquid in the bottle does not escape to the outside.

Now that is just one of the methods you can use to make a thermos flask at home. The other most commonly used method is the one that involves the use of foam. In this method, the space between the two bottles is filled with foam. Once the space is filled, you let it rest for about a day after which it will be dry and you can duct tape the entire outside of the bottle.

Another alternative method with which you can make a simple thermos flask and perhaps the simplest is the one whereby only one bottle is involved. In this method, what you do is you take a glass bottle of the appropriate size, wrap it with paper towels and then follow up this layer of paper towels with a layer of aluminum foil. This layer is further covered with another layer of tape expect this time it’s not the ordinary duct tape. Instead, you use electrical tape. Electrical tape is preferred in this method of making a thermos flask because it is known to be a great insulator. Once you are done wrapping the bottle with the three layers, you can try and test the thermos flask by taking temperature measurements.

If you want to make a thermos flask at home, make sure you identify the purpose you intend to use it for before deciding on the method to use. This is because not all the methods are effective. For instance, a thermos flask meant to maintain the temperature of a hot beverage would not be quite effective if it is made with the dried foam between the two bottles. This is because the hot beverage is likely to burn the foam and cause it to melt.
