How To Make A Kitchen Compost Bin?

If you have a garden, then you know how important it is to take good care of it. One way of doing this is feeding it with manure so that it can be productive every time. Artificial manure can be quite costly and for this reason, making compost from your kitchen wastes is always ideal to curb this.

In the market, there are many compost kitchen bins that come in different shapes and sizes for you to choose from, and since we are reducing the costs here, you can create your own bin. It may seem hard to do things yourself because of the fear that they may not turn out as perfect.

What you need to know is that once you put your mind to it, you can make it. Therefore, we are going to discuss how to make the kitchen bin for compost step by step.

Quick Navigation

  • A sealable container for the compost
  • A tray to fit in the container
  • A bag of soil
  • Charcoal air filter
  • Old newspaper shreds
  • A drill or hammer
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue

First, pick a suitable location for the compost bin you are making. In most cases, it is always good to place the compost bin under the sink so that it is easily accessible by the user/s. If you live in a large household setting, it is obvious that there is an increased amount of waste matter. Therefore, a large container for the compost bin works best here and it will fit right under the sink.

Second, the container should either be made of metal or plastic. You can also choose the buckets and the garbage bins that are deemed less useful. Start customizing it to your liking. Also remember, the container should be sealed when you start using it. Most people choose to make more than one compost bin for later use. In essence, when the container is out in the garden, there should be another one to replace it for a while.

Make holes in the container using a hammer or drill (depending on the material of the container). For a metal container, a drill will make perfect holes and for a plastic one, the hammer or scissors will do just fine in creating the holes. The holes are to be drilled at the bottom of the container and for some reason, drill on the rim as well. In addition, it is ideal to drill a few holes on the lid of the container to allow for air to circulate inside when the container is filled with items to compost.

Using the old newspaper and glue or tape, line the tray to put in your compost bin. Then after, place it in the compost bin. Add a layer of soil in it to about 4 inches deep.

Continue adding another layer of dry things like the newspaper both shredded and those that are not. When you have added enough, you have successfully made your own kitchen compost bin. It is ready for use. Place it under the sink to begin the composting task.

It is so easy to turn a bucket or any container to be used as a kitchen compost bin. Just follow the steps above and you will have the skills at your fingertips. Ideally, you should have all you need for your composting process to be successful at close range. Always keep shredded paper near and a small soil container. This is useful to reduce the smell that may occur after some time and also helps in decomposition. Just like that, you have yourself a kitchen compost bin.
